Frequently Asked Question (Wk3-Jan2025)

FAQ

Question : On the CP-CAN FD single and dual-port versions, how do I access each port via VCP on Windows?

Answer : One way to access the ports of the CP-CANFD is via the Virtual COM Port (VCP Interface).  Software which can open VCPS (such as terminal programs) can be used to send and receive commands and data.

First of all, you can install the CP-CANFD drivers which are available from the downloads tab at https://connectiveperipherals.com/products/cp-canfd

When connected to the USB port, your CP-CANFD will now appear under the Ports (COM & LPT) section of Device Manager and can now be opened from your VCP application.

Our single port versions (CP-CANFD-1P and CP-CANFD-1P-ISO) appear as one COM port.

CP-CANFD Port 1 (COMx) (where x is the COM port number assigned)

Our dual-port versions (CP-CANFD-2P and CP-CANFD-2P-ISO) appear as two separate COM ports.  You can open the corresponding port in a separate communications program to use each channel independently.

CP-CANFD Port 1 (COMx) (where x is the COM port number assigned)

CP-CANFD Port 2 (COMy) (where y is the COM port number assigned)

Question : Does CP-CANFD support advanced filtering?

Answer : Yes, CP-CANFD products support advanced filtering capabilities to help users isolate and process specific messages efficiently, reducing the load on the microcontroller.  This is achieved by configuring the filters.

    • The acceptance mask, in conjunction with the acceptance code, defines which CAN message frames (i.e., of a specific ID or range of CAN IDs) will be passed to the serial interface.
    • This filtering mechanism ensures that only relevant messages are handled, optimizing system performance.

For further details, please refer to the product datasheet.

Question : Do the new CP-CANFD devices support Listen Only Mode for passive reception of CAN frames on the CAN Bus?

Answer : Yes, the CP-CANFD products support opening CAN channels in Listen Only Mode, in which no bus interaction takes place from the CP-CANFD controller. This mode can be utilised in the following ways:

    • By using the CP-CANFD Utility to open the device via its assigned COM port and selecting ‘Listen Only’ from the mode configuration drop down box (Windows Only).
    • By using your preferred terminal emulator to access the device via its assigned COM port and then issuing the L[CR] command to open the channel in Listen Only mode (OS independent).
